Abraham “Abe” Davidoff passed away peacefully on November 5, 2017, at the age of 94. Abe was co-owner of Davco Stores in Monticello NY with his wife Libby. He was a devoted husband, father, son, and Zayde.
Abe was born in Monticello, NY on February 21, 1923. He was a World War II Veteran, a Brother in the Masons Fallsburg Lodge 1122, and a member of the Jewish War Veterans Post 206. He was an active member of the Landfield Avenue Synagogue.
Abe served in the Army Air Force until his father fell ill, returning to the family business, Strauss Stores, in 1946. Strauss Stores became Davco Stores in the late 1950’s and was a landmark establishment on Broadway. It provided the first job opportunities for young family members and residents of Monticello. In the late 1970’s Abe and Libby became sole proprietors of the business, until their retirement in 1998. Post retirement, Abe moved the contents of Davco to his basement, and became an EBay entrepreneur until 2008.
One of Abe’s hobbies was to buy and renovate properties. He was a co-owner of a bungalow colony on Floral Drive, the Professional Building on Prince Street (the old A&P), and the former NYS Employment Office on Liberty Street.
Abe loved the Village of Monticello, and never wanted to leave. His store was his living room, and his employees, salesmen, and customers became his friends and family.
Survivors include his daughters Rita (Larry) Adelson, and Joan (Kevin) Kumor, sister, Sarah Naimer, granddaughters Jillian Kumor and Julia Adelson, sisters-in-law Phyllis Gerber and Irene Gerber, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Abe was predeceased by his parents, Manus and Annie Davidoff, sister Sylvia Greene, brothers H. Leo and Walter, and wife Libby.
A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway, Monticello, New York. Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery, Thompson Road, Monticello.
