I am very sorry to learn about Barry’s passing and send my deepest condolences to the family. I knew him as a good friend and—early in my career—as an industry expert on twin-screw extrusion and compounding. I include some remarks I presented at Barry’s NYU Retirement Celebration from January 24, 2019:
“In some sense, I met Barry 35 years ago. It was during my first weeks of employment at my father-in-law’s business where a much younger version of me had been hired as an account executive for the Werner & Pfleiderer Corporation.
I recall wandering around in the agency’s archives where we kept printed materials such as press releases, advertising, and brochures. There, on the “W” shelf was a stack of Business Week article reprints from 1982 on making alcohol fuel from old newspapers, sawdust, and agricultural waste.
Alternative fuels were of significant business interest following the 1970s oil crises, and Prof. Rugg’s patented cellulosic ethanol process promised to produce a gallon of alcohol for under a dollar!
Pictured prominently in the feature article, was this bushy-haired guy with an impressive mustache, standing beside a W&P extruder at NYU’s pilot plant facility in Westbury, Long Island.
Fast forward almost four decades, and here we are today. I have since returned to the academic world and am working in NYU Physics at the Center for Soft Matter Research. As many of you know, my wife Carol is an administrator here in Chemistry.
One day, soon after Carol started working at NYU, she called to say there is this professor named Barry Rugg working in our department. Do you remember him?
Well, of course I do! We ‘met’ in the archives going way back!
It was then in 2012 that I finally made the acquaintance of Barry and we became fast friends. I am both happy and sad to say farewell to Barry and wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement. A kindred spirit, fellow chemical engineer, and friend. I was delighted to inherit Barry’s library of engineering books. Barry, your legacy will live on and Carol and I look forward to catching up with you soon!”
And for the next few years, Carol and I enjoyed many delightful dinners in the city with Barry. We will miss you.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Barry. He was a good friend and a great colleague to us. We had worked together closely for almost 10 years; he is the one would extend a hand and give you a big hug when you need it. Specifically, I remembered the warmness I felt when he gave me a lift home after a late-night work. The kindness he shared with us over the years will be remembered forever!

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Barry. I had the pleasure of working with Barry at NYU for several years. Barry was a dedicated, kind professor. Barry had a warm and ready smile that brightened my day whenever I saw him. My fondest memory of Barry was during the summer when there were not a lot of people around in the Chemistry Department. Barry and I both arrived early and Barry had a pot of coffee going in his office, a few doors down the hall from mine. He invited me in for a cup and we would spend just a few minutes engaged in pleasant conversation. He always wanted to hear about our bicycle and rowing adventures. I really looked forward to that little ritual before the start of my work day. After Barry retired, my husband and I, and another NYU colleague got together with him for dinner from time to time. We will miss Barry.
