Obituary of Dorothy L. Stier
Dorothy L. Stier, 86, long-time resident of Sullivan County, passed away on September 27, 2016. Raised in Monticello, she moved to Liberty, where she lived until recently, after her marriage to the late Lawrence Stier in 1951. At the time of her death she was a resident of Dresher, PA. The daughter of the late Samuel and Eva Simon, she graduated from Monticello High School in 1947 and received a B.S. from Syracuse University in 1951.
Dottie, as she was widely known, was born into a hotel family, and then married into another. Her grandparents owned the Moneka Lodge in South Fallsburg, which was sold when she was a teenager. (It was later renamed The Pines.) At Stier's Hotel in Ferndale, she oversaw the office, dining room and, as is common in family businesses, anything else that needed her attention. She was very proud of her Borscht Belt roots and was a frequent contributor to social media sites on the Catskills.
In her 40s, Dottie started a new career with the Sullivan County Department of Social Services. She began as an examiner and rose through the ranks to become a caseworker and then the Director of Administrative Services. Through the years she was also active in community groups, particularly the sisterhood of Congregation Ahavath Israel in Liberty.
A few years ago, when she could no longer live alone, Dottie moved to Dresher Estates assisted care, near her son's home. She appreciated the care she received there and enjoyed her new friends.
Dottie lost her beloved husband of 59 years, Larry, in 2011. She is survived by her children Marc and Nancy, daughter-in-law Diane, granddaughter Katja, and her sister Helen Simon, as well as her nieces, nephews and their children.
A funeral service will take place on Thursday September 29, 2016 at 11:30AM at the Congregation Ahavath Israel Synagogue, 39 Chestnut St, Liberty, NY 12754. Burial will immediately follow in the Synagogue Cemetery on Hy-San-Ah Road, Liberty.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Congregation Ahavath Israel or the American Heart Association.
