Obituary of Alton Etkin

Al Etkin, formerly of Rock Hill, NY, passed away on April 15, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on May 17, 1931, in New York City to Benjamin and Florence (Klinger) Etkin, he lived a life defined by service, leadership, and a deep commitment to his community.
A graduate of New York University’s School of Liberal Arts, Class of 1953, Al went on to serve honorably in the United States Army from 1953 to 1956 during the Korean War era. Following his military service, he built a long and successful career in the broadcast industry, spending more than 35 years in radio, including serving as general manager of three stations in the tri-state area. He later operated his own advertising agency and worked as a media consultant, earning the respect of colleagues throughout the field.
Al’s dedication to veterans was a central part of his life. From 1994 to 2000, he served as Director of the Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency, where he also oversaw the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty. He was deeply involved in veterans’ organizations, including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Jewish War Veterans, holding numerous leadership roles at the post, district, and state levels. Known for his steady leadership and commitment to fellow veterans, he was also a graduate of the American Legion College (New York Department).
Beyond his work with veterans, Al remained active in civic life. He served as President of the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce in 1981 and was a longtime member of Congressman Benjamin Gilman’s Veterans Committee for more than 20 years. In recognition of his lifelong service, he was inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame in 2005.
Above all, Al was devoted to his family. He is survived by his daughter, Lynn Murray of Wappingers Falls, New York; his daughter-in-law, Bess; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Esther, in 2012, and his son, Phil, in 2019.
He will be remembered for his dedication to others, his enduring sense of duty, and the lasting impact he made on his community.
A funeral service will take place on Sunday, April 19, 2026 at 11:00am at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway, Monticello, NY 12701. Interment with full military honors will follow at the Temple Sholom Cemetery, Southwoods Road, Monticello.
