Obituary of Sylvia Miller
Sylvia Miller of Monticello, NY passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Achieve Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Liberty. She was 97 years old. The daughter of the late Jacob and Lena Bizinsky, Sylvia was born on February 23, 1920 in Hartford, Ct. but lived and attended school in the Bronx, NY during her formative years. She first came to Sullivan County in the late 1930’s to help her mother run a summer boarding house where she met the love of her life, Max Miller. They settled in Hurleyville, NY after he was discharged from the US Army in 1946. They bought his family’s property on Old Liberty Road in the early 50’s and operated Max Miller’s Bungalow Colony there for many years.
She was employed by the NYS Dept of Labor in Monticello, NY for 20 years as a Principle Clerk until retiring in 1990. She was a long time member of Congregation Anschei of Hurleyville, NY She was very proud to have achieved her weight loss goal thru Weight Watchers and attended meetings in the area as a lifetime member regularly. Like many of her generation she was an accomplished cook, baker and sewer. She enjoyed playing Mah Johg and cards as well as shopping with her close friends Gail Makofsky, Helen Carlson and Barbara Lounsbury.
She was a devoted wife, mother and aunt who lived for her family. Survivors include: her son, Paul Miller and wife Dawn, daughter Marilyn Betters and husband Roger, niece Karen Litvack (Joe) and their daughters Jacki and Andrea, nephew Alan Polsky (Linda) and their daughters Marissa and Lauren, as well as 8 great great nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind nieces and nephews on her husband’s side of the family (Ellen Greenwald, Stuart Stein, Norman Stein, Shelly Fogel and Murray Ainxt and a sister in law Lilly Ainxt.
Sylvia was pre-deceased by her husband Max in 1969, her sister Esther Polsky and brother in law Lou Polsky and sister in law Miriam Stein.
A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 11:00am at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc, 388 Broadway, Monticello, NY. Burial will immediately follow at the Hurleyville Synagogue Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Hurleyville, NY.
