Sherman Weiler, 94, of Dewitt, New York, died on January 9, 2014, at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, New York. Sherman was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 19, 1919. He moved to Monticello, New York as a child and graduated Monticello High School in 1936. Sherman enlisted in the army in April, 1942. Because he was fluent in French, he was placed in the Transportation Corps, in which he served in North Africa and later in Italy until November 1945. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and a European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.
Sherman married his wife Lucille in 1945, and they lived in Monticello for almost 65 years until 2008, when they moved to DeWitt. Sherman was part-owner of a tire sales business and gas station in Monticello and later worked as a sales manager for tire sales businesses in Orange and Duchess Counties. He served as executive vice president of the Landfield Avenue Synagogue and was an officer for many years of the Knights of Pythias, a service organization in Sullivan County, New York and also was active in Kiwanis and Jewish War Veterans.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille Weiler, of Dewitt; a son, Robert, and Wendi Birnbaum of Manlius, New York; three granddaughters, Rebecca, of New York City, and Sara and Hannah of Manlius; a daughter, Nanette Weiler Lancey and son-in-law, Paul Lancey of Dix Hills, New York; a grandson, Brian Lancey and his wife Elizabeth and great-grandson James Alexander of Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey; a grandson Russell Lancey and his wife, Cynthia Lancey of Massapequa, New York; and a grandson Douglas Lancey and his fiancée Lisa of New York City, together with his large extended family who will miss him greatly.
The Family will receive friends on Sunday January 12, 2014 from 12pm to 1pm in the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc. 388 Broaday monticello, NY. Funeral Services will be on at 1pm at the Funeral Home. Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz will officate. Burail will be in the Landfield Ave Synagogue Cemetery Thompson Rd. Monticello
