Obituary of Harold "Iggy" Kronenberg

HAROLD "IGGY" KRONENBERG FEBRUARY 15, 1931 ~ AUGUST 25, 2014 WOODRIDGE, NY Harold "Iggy" Kronenberg, of Woodridge, NY passed away on Monday, August 25th in Middletown, NY. The son of the late Alex and Anna (Levine) Kronenberg, and the stepson of the late Patricia, he was born February 15, 1931. He was 83 years old. Harold was co-owner of The Sullivan County Steam Laundry in Woodridge, NY. He is survived by his wife Judy of 54 years, his son William (Janis) Kronenberg and daughter Lisa (Robert) Miller. He is also survived by two cherished granddaughters, Jenna and Alexis Kronenberg. Harold is predeceased by his brother, George and is survived by his nieces Sheri, Danielle and Alison. In addition to raising his family and running the Laundry, Harold began his second career as a Fire Service Leader in his community as a fire fighter, and then by 1953 as Assistant Chief in the Woodridge Fire Department. From then on, he gave his time tirelessly in the following, overlapping positions: 1961-65 - Fire Chief, Woodridge Fire Dept, 1965-75 - Deputy Fire Coordinator, Sullivan County, 1972 - President of Woodridge Fire Dept., 1975-2002 - Fire Coordinator, Sullivan County, 1976 - Regional Fire Administrator, 1979-1981-County Representative of NY State Association of Fire Chiefs, 1980-2002 - Originator and Coordinator of the Sullivan County Arson Task Force. Among many duties, Harold was responsible for a 5 year, $100,000 budget involving training, arson prevention and detection, and training schools for volunteers. He was instrumental in the development of Sullivan County's Emergency Dispatch Center and the formation of the Enhanced 911 System. He oversaw the County Control Center and its day-to-day operations such as communications, radio equipment and training materials as well as locating radio transmission sites. Iggy was known as the tireless Coordinator who never slept. He was at every fire, at any hour. He played a major role in keeping Sullivan County firemen abreast of local, state and national legislation affecting the volunteer fire service. He was most proud of the Arson Task Force he developed and the brotherly camaraderie of the Fire Departments in the surrounding towns that he served; Woodridge, Mountaindale, South Fallsburg and Monticello, to name a few. He will be missed by family, friends and all the men and women who served the county with him. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 27th at 3 pm at the Woodridge Fire House, 2 Dairyland Road in Woodridge. Burial will follow in the Woodridge Congregation Ohave Shalom Cemetery in Glen Wild. Shiva will be held at the Kronenberg residence in Woodridge on Thursday, August 28th, from 12:00 to 4:00pm and then 6:00 to 8:00pm.
