Obituary of Warren "Buddy" Irving Goldsmith

Warren "Buddy" Goldsmith Of San Antonio, Texas Formerly of Monticello, New York May 5, 1940-September 27, 2012 72 years old Warren "Buddy" Goldsmith lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, September 27, 2012. Although he and his wife reside in San Antonio, Buddy returned to his home town of Monticello to spend his last days with family and friends. Buddy was born in Monticello on May 5, 1940 and attended Monticello High School where he was a track and soccer star until his graduation in 1959 when he immediately enlisted in the Army. He applied this love of sports in his position as Director of Recreation for the Village of Monticello. He created the Monticello School of Gymnastics over 35 years ago and his team became one of the best in Central New York. He also served as the Director of Special Olympics for Sullivan and Orange County and worked with Special Olympics for 30 years taking his knowledge of gymnastics to create routines for girls with special needs to compete state-wide. In this capacity he attended many state, national, and international Special Olympics competitions. He also coached boys' and girls' soccer, downhill skiing, and track, specializing in the pole vault for the Monticello High School. Later, Buddy became Manager of Emerald Green and Manager of the Lake Louise Marie Water Plant. His love of children and sports continued throughout his life. He volunteered at several National Gymnastics events including the World Cup and the Russian Tour and was part of the Event Team of the USAIGC National/International Gymnastics Competition for the last nine years. Travel was another obsession of his. Both he and his wife Myrna have been lucky enough to travel the world-6 continents and over 40 countries. Buddy is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Myrna Rosenberg Goldsmith, of San Antonio, TX; his daughter and son-in-law Lori Rito Pi Goldsmith and Pablo Rito Pi who live in Sweden with their children Lisette Rito and Lucca Rito; grandson Brandon Goldsmith of NYC; his sister, Roni Mandel, of South Carolina; his brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Sue Goldsmith, of Monticello. The family would like to express a special thanks to Howie and Sue and their son Mat. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties or to New York Special Olympics. A memorial service for Buddy will be held Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 11:00am at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home 388 Broadway, Monticello, New York 12701.
