Obituary of Martin Gottlieb

MARTIN GOTTLIEB September 11, 1931 - November 5, 2012 Rock Hill, NY Born in Brooklyn on September 11, 1931 to Max Noah Gottlieb and Jeanette Rockowitz Gottlieb. The family moved to Rock Hill in 1943. Martin attended Monticello High School and graduated in 1949. He then attended Pace College where he majored in Marketing and Advertising with some accounting courses. In his four years at Pace, he never missed the Dean's List and was active in Student Affairs. He graduated Cum Laude. On November 26, 1953 he married his childhood sweetheart, Miss Harriet Sarowitz, while he was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ, having been drafted the previous August during the Korean Conflict. From Fort Dix he was sent overseas to the 1st division in Wurtsburg, Germany where he served until 1955 when he was Honorably Discharged. Back to Rock Hill he came with his wife, Harriet. Martin worked at Greens Dept. Store from 1955-1957 and Cohen Lumber from 1957-1960. In May, 1960 he and his brother, Howard (also a Korean War veteran), with borrowed money and a mortgage, opened the Rock Hill Trading Post. It was a success and in 1978 they opened the Monticello Trading Post, followed by the Liberty store and then a Port Jervis store. He was a member of many organizations including a 50-year Mason, a founding member and Commissioner of the Rock Hill Fire Dept., a 25-year member of Monticello Rotary Club, Temple Sholom of Monticello, Monticello B'nai B'rith Charter Member, Jewish War Veterans, Jewish Women International, State Civil Defense Commission, and Committee Chairman of Boy Scouts Pack 101. Survivors include his loving wife, Harriet, of 58 years; children: Steven (Susan), Gary (Allison), Laura Carnell (Jim); grandchildren: Matthew Gottlieb (Derryl), Hayden Carnell, Lillie Carnell, Ryan Gottlieb, Logan Gottlieb; great-grandchild, Madeline; brothers, Leon (Ronda), Howard (Marilyn); nieces Cindy, Dana and nephew, Alan, and many great nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 7, at 11 a.m. at Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway, Monticello, NY. Interment will be at Temple Sholom Cemetery, South Woods Drive, Monticello, NY.
