Obituary of Sylvia Schachnovsky

Sylvia Schachnovsky, a resident of River Garden Hebrew Home in Jacksonville, Fl died Monday, December 10, 2012 at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 29, 1917, the oldest daughter of Nathan and Rose Grodsky Siegel. She moved to Kiamesha Lake in 1937 when she married Meyer Schachnovsky, and remained an active part of the community until she moved to Hallandale, Florida full-time in 1998. She was a special and unique woman, memorable to everyone she met. She told great stories of helping her husband by carrying wrenches, answering telephones for his businesses and being involved as a life member of Hadassah, a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and a supporter of many community organizations. In February, 2006, she moved to Jacksonville to be near her son. She is survived by two sons, David Schachnovsky and his wife, Nancy, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and Allan Schachnovsky and his wife, Debbie, of Monticello. She leaves behind four devoted grandchildren: Amy Valerio and her husband Peter of Seoul, South Korea, John Schachnovsky and his wife Carmen of Bangkok, Thailand, Nicole Schachnovsky of New York City and Richard Schachnovsky of New York City. She also leaves four beloved great-grandchildren: Mikey and Meadow Valerio, Cole Schachnovsky and Maya Schachnovsky, her sister, Harriet Dokson and many caring nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Meyer, who died in 1985, and her sister, Mildred Rose. Interment and graveside funeral services will be held at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue cemetery on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 10:00am Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions to remember Sylvia's long and full life can be directed in her memory to the River Garden Foundation, 11401 Old St. Augustine, Road Jacksonville, Florida 32258. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home of Monticello.
