Obituary of Barry L. Berman

Barry L. Berman, a long-time Liberty (NY) resident, passed away at his home in Monticello on Friday, January 7, 2011. He was born in Brooklyn, on October 27th, 1924 to Joseph and Rachel Berman. Barry grew up in Liberty, attended Ohio State and graduated from Syracuse University with a philosophy degree. He and his wife Elizabeth Gibber Berman, raised their family in Liberty. When their house burned in 2007 they moved to Monticello. As one of the principals of Sullivan County Wholesalers, he helped build the infrastructure of the Catskills during its heyday by supplying the plumbing, heating and electrical trades to hundreds of businesses and homes. Barry was actively involved in Liberty Rotary, Ahavath Israel Synagogue and served as a trustee as well as a vice president of Community General Hospital's board of trustees. He was instrumental in the establishment of Hospice of Sullivan County. He was a brilliant philosopher and humanitarian with a love of music, history, nature and humankind. He was devoted to all of his family and friends. Barry was predeceased by his daughter, Jo Berman. He was survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Gibber Berman, son Mitchell and wife Barbara, daughter Erica Berman, son Darrell Berman and wife Pamela, and son-in-law Jeffrey Dubnick. He is also survived by grandchildren Alex Berman and wife Lisa Wald, Matthew Berman, Rebecca Berman and Luka Dubnick. His funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 9 at 12:00 noon at the Ahavath Israel Synagogue, Chestnut Street in Liberty. Burial will follow at the Ahavath Israel Cemetery in Liberty. Memorial contributions can be made to the Gilda's Club and the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home of Monticello.
