Obituary of Seymour Sommers

SEYMOUR SOMMERS MONTICELLO, NY May 23, 1919-March 12, 2011 Seymour Sommers passed quietly on March 12, 2011 in the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty, NY. He was 91. Seymour was born in Brooklyn the son of Joseph and Ida Gerstman Sommers. He moved to Monticello at the age of 12. He graduated from Monticello High School and attended Buffalo State Teachers College where he met his wife Sari and received a teaching degree in Industrial Arts. After college, he taught air craft maintenance for the ARMY in Biloxi, Mississippi until being drafted into the NAVY. After the war he moved back to Monticello and went to work with his father and eventually became the President of JJ Sommers, the family corporation, until his retirement. He served the Village of Monticello for ten years as a Trustee and continued to the love the Village all his life. He was also a past Commander of Jewish War Veterans and served as a State Officer. "Everyone who new Seymour knew of his lifelong love of anything mechanical, especially aircraft and motor vehicles, he always had an ear to listen and a hand to help everyone." Seymour is survived by his sons; David and his wife Toby of Florida and Gary and Theresa of Monticello, his four grandsons and one granddaughter and their spouses and several great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Sari, and by his brother, Michael and Arthur. Graveside funeral services will be held today, Monday, March 13, 2011 at 3pm in the Workman Circle #610 Cemetery on Thompson Rd in Monticello. Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz will officiate.
