Obituary of Victor W Gordon

Victor Gordon Aug 15, 1914-July 25, 2012 Monticello, NY Victor Gordon, a longtime area resident, and active senior, passed away after a long illness, in the skilled nursing unit of Catskill Regional Hosp. He was just a month short of being 98. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved up to Monticello as a baby with his parents. As a teen he worked on his parents farm digging, planting and working with the cows, horses and chickens. Later he worked at the hotel and day camp his parents managed, on that farm. Victor also ran Camp Hamilton where many Monticello children spent their summers. He met his wife Marion at his parent's hotel, where she was a guest. They got married in 1938 and were married for 53 years. They lived at the hotel when they first got married then moved to the big city of Monticello. Victor worked with his brother Max with the chickens on the farm. He also ran a sand and gravel business for 20 years. Then he managed Holiday Mountain for 22 years. During his time at Holiday Mountain he also worked in real estate. Victor joined Temple Sholom in the early 60's. The Temple was a second home for Victor and Marion. His son Harris went to school and had his Bar Mitzvah there. Victor never wanted to be president but was on the board for 30 years or more. He was very involved with the building and grounds committee making sure, along with Joe Cohen, and Seymour Feldberg that the Temple was kept up and improved. Victor joined the Rotary Club in 1954 and was an active member for 58 years, becoming a life member. He served as president and won "Rotarian of the Year" three times. Victor is predeceased by his parents, Bessie & Harris Gordon, 3 brothers and 4 sisters, his beloved wife Marion, and his son Harris. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Before Victor's passing, there were plans to have a birthday party for him. Because of his love for the Temple and building, instead of presents requests were made to make donations the Temple Sholom Kitchen Fund. Sadly, he did not make it to his 98th birthday. The family suggests making donations to Temple Sholom for the Kitchen Fund that will be named in Victor's memory. Mail checks to Temple Sholom, P. O.
