Obituary of Sarah S. Monzo

Sarah S. Monzo June 13, 1923-January 14, 2014 Of Liberty, New York 90 years old Sarah S. Monzo was born June 13, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Ida Blumberg Siegel and moved to Liberty at a very young age. She went to Ferndale School and graduated from Liberty Central High School, class of 1941. Her family owned M&S Steam Laundry in Ferndale. She was a retired bookkeeper for Mountain View Farm in Ferndale, where she worked for 32 years. In 1945, Sarah married Thomas Monzo and they had 2 children, Ronald Monzo and Denise Watson (Michael). She is additionally survived by her grandson Todd Kurpil (Jenny) of Los Angeles, CA; and her great granddaughter Kalliope Quinn Kurpil; her sister, Tillie Seiden, of Key Biscayne, FL; her sister-in-law, Ina Siegel, of Santa Monica, CA, and several Nieces and nephews. Sarah was deeply looking forward to the birth of her second great grandchild in the near future. She was an active woman in Liberty, as a life member and past President of the PTA, life member and past President of Haddassah, and past President for decades of Ahavath Israel Sisterhood. Sarah volunteered at Catskill Regional Medical Center and was a member of Ahavath Israel Synagogue. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, who passed away in 1992, as well as her brothers Abe and Allen Siegel, her nephew Steven Zalkin, nieces Gretta Joy Zalkin, Mona Gail Zalkin, and Geena Zalkin. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 1:00pm at the Ahavath Israel Synagogue, Chestnut Street, Liberty. Burial will follow in the synagogue cemetery. A family statement reads, “Mom will always be in our hearts, she was a very courageous woman, who overcame her disability and was the best. We love you mom forever and always.” Donations may be made in Sarah’s name to the Ahavath Israel Synagogue, 39 Chestnut Street, Liberty, NY 12754. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home of Monticello.
