Obituary of Rose Shapiro

ROSE SHAPIRO MONTICELLO, NY Rose Shapiro, a lifetime area resident and the retired owner and operator of the Mercury cleaners in Monticello, died peacefully on Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the Achieve Rehab & Nursing Facility in Liberty, NY. She was 97. Rose was born in Kiamesha Lake on October 18, 1907 the daughter of Harry and Anne Wechsler. She was one of six siblings who attended the one room schoolhouse in Kiamesha, and went on to graduate from Monticello High School in 1925. Rose grew up amid the fledgling Catskill resort industry and helped her family build a small farm into a boarding house, which later became one of two family-owned hotels. In 1941, Rose married Louis Shapiro and the coupe relocated to Buffalo, where Rose worked for the Army Air Corp. After the war, the couple returned to Monticello where they owned and operated the Mercury Dry Cleaners on Prince Street. Rose later worker for Kleins until her retirement in 1981. Rose, or Miz Sapiro as many called her, pursued an active role in the community through her membership in local chapters of Bnai Brith, Hadassah and the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Sisterhood as well as by volunteering as an inspector for many local elections. She is survived by her two sons; David Shapiro and his fiance Melissa Rennie of Monticello, and Harvey Shapiro and his longtime companion Linda of Staatsburg, her sister; Stella Winawer, and her three grandchildren and one great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by her husband, Louis, her brother George and sisters Ethel Grogan, Tressa Goddess and Sarah Griff. Funeral services will be held today Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at 3pm in the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc. 388 Broadway Monticello. Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz will officiate. Burial will be in the Landfield Ave Synagogue cemetery Monticello. Donations in memory of Rose may be made to the Landfield Avenue Synagogue. The family will be sitting Shiva at the Davids home in Monticello; friends are welcome during the afternoon and evening. Funeral arrangements by Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc Monticello
