Obituary of Fay Malkiel
Fay Malkiel, a longtime resident of South Fallsburg and loving widow of the late Daniel,
passed away on October 16, 2012 at the Brookside Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center
in Roslyn, PA.
Although the devoted daughter of late David and Celia Karp grew up in Hurley ville,
small town living could not contain her energy, free spirit and sense of adventure. It was
no surprise that following graduation she used her award winning secretarial skills to
support herself as she traveled. She met and married Dan in Philadelphia, moved back
to the Catskills and together they operated a retail shoe store called Karp's Shoery.
Karp's Shoery was a fixture and gathering place on Main Street in South Fallsburg for
thirty years. As a result of their devotion and hard work, they created a loving family and
a successful business. Fay loved to be involved in her community and was an active
member and officer in the Sisterhood of the South Fallsburg Hebrew Association,
Women's B'nai Brith and Hadassah, as well as an avid Mah Jongg player. Following
Dan's death, she worked for the State of New York until retirement. Her forever young
attitude, independence and sense of humor carried Fay through her retirement years as
she relocated once again and made new friends in Philadelphia, while still staying connected to her
roots in South Fallsburg. However, Fay's greatest legacy is the boundless, unconditional
love and pride that she felt toward her children, grandchildren and great grandchild.
She is survived her son; Dr. Benjamin Malkiel and his wife, Carol and her daughter Tina; her grandchildren: Daniel, Nechama (Toby), Eric and Stephanie (Robert) and her
great granddaughter, Yonah. She has filled their hearts with endless love and their minds
with countless memories to sustain them.
A special thank you to Brookside for their compassionate and loving care.
