Elsa Schoch Bassi, "Grosmama", died peacefully on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at home. She was 91. She was born on June 23, 1915 to the late Berta and Werner Schoch, in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Survivors include her devoted and loving children: Judith Rhulen and Jolanda (Reinlieb) Bassi of Monticello, her son Ferdinand and Romi (Lueti) Bassi of Lugano, Switzerland; her loving grandchildren, Suzanne (Rhulen) and Joseph Loughlin of Rock Hill, N.Y., Harry and Jennifer (Lehman) Rhulen of Evergreen, Colo., Erik Rhulen of Las Vegas, Nev., Anthony and Ashley (Scott) Rhulen of Los Angeles, Calif., Marcus and Denise (Collura) Bassi of Monticello, N.Y., Pascal Bassi and Tanja Bassi of Luzerne, Switzerland and Brunhilda Schulz of Senden, Germany; her great-grandchildren: Juliette and Trevor Loughlin, Zoe and Max Rhulen, Christopher, Kevin and Amanda Bassi, Phylicia, Michael, Brian and Eileen Schulman; her devoted friends: Michael, Johanna, and Stenek; and her extended "Monticello" family. Elsa was predeceased by her brother, Werner Schoch of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Elsa became a talented haute couturier (dressmaker) and raised her family in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, sewing and operating her own Inn, catering to vacationers from around the world as well as local people down on their luck. She was active in her youth and loved to ski and mountain climb. She enjoyed music and mostly, she enjoyed spending time with her many friends. She moved to the United States after retiring to be closer to her family. Though confronted with many challenges throughout her life, she will be most remembered for her unwavering positive outlook, beautiful sparkling blue eyes and perpetual smile.
