Dear Gertrude, I am so sorry to hear of Solly's death. I really liked the man, he was kind, and funny, and listened well. I first met him when I came up here from the city on a friend's referral, and he took me to "the barn" (on Fulton Hill Rd.) where I have now lived for 24 or so years. The family living in the house at the time were so poor they had no food, as the father was , I think, mental, and I saw Solly give the guy money for food and cigarettes. Later, Solly paid his own money to have the house and celler cleaned up because the seller didn't do it as he was supposed to. Later, I would frequently stop in his office, plunk myself down on his couch, and tell him my most recent adventure, and ask him what was happening in town. People would come and go, being there for the same reason, Solly was good company. Plus he knew stuff. He gave me advice often, who to see to fix this or that.
Did you know I even wrote a song about Solly, and sang it at the first local talent show held in Hortonville the first year I was here. My friends joked and said I was going native, which is a good thing in my book. Here it is:
Up in the Catskills,
Neath sun and moon,
On a trout stream called the Callicoon,
High on a hilltop,near Fulton's farm,
We found a treasure,
We called the barn.
Refrain: Solly Katzoff told Mac Adams,
This is it, it's a hit,
Linda said she could not live without it.
So we asked the bank and mother,
for a loan, and mortgage,
since we had a money shortage.
Now we're in the country, and
we know for sure,
Cuz we can smell sweet grass
and manure!
Well,I will miss Solly very, very much, even though I didn't see him much in the last few years--I was mostly in the Middle East teaching.
My condolences to you and your family. Love, Linda
