Obituary of Roslyn Lewis

ROSLYN LEWIS BROOKLYN, NY Roslyn Lewis, lovingly known to her children and grandchildren as Mama Roz and to followers of the Times Herald-Record as the shrinking red head with the white bunny slippers, a Jewish mother whos quick wit and sharp tongue was equaled only by the size of her warm heart and the deep devotion she had for her family, died peacefully on Friday in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was 69. The daughter of the late Max and Ethel Greenberg, Roz was born Sept. 18, 1938 in Brooklyn. Among the early passions in her life was to help raise her three sons, watch over her sweet parents and engage whenever possible in a competitive game of Mah Jong. She took her Mah Jong set on all family trips, ready in case a game suddenly broke out. She started her family in Brooklyn and for a short time called North Massapequa, L.I. home. She later moved with her family to Liberty, making many friends in the community. Roz eventually moved back to Brooklyn and for many years worked for New York City and the city fire department. She is survived by three sons: Barry and his wife Bonnie of the Town of Neversink, Howard and his wife Terri of Perry Hall, Maryland and Jason and his wife Jill of Goshen; five grandchildren, Sean, Daniel, Dustin, Matthew and Courtney; brother-in-law Michael Cohen and several nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her loving sister, Barbara. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, April 14, in the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway Monticello, NY. Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz will officiate. Burial will be in Ahavath Israel Cemetery, Liberty, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of ones choice in Rozs name.
