Obituary of Joseph G Cohen

Joseph G. Cohen Monticello, NY April 27, 1915-February 27, 2009 Joseph G. Cohen, 93, of Monticello NY died peacefully at home, on Friday, February 27, surrounded by his family. Joe was born on the family farm in Briscoe, New York, on April 27, 1915. The family moved to Wurtsboro and eventually to Brooklyn, where Joe graduated from Stuyvesant High School and attended City College before joining the army at the start of World War II. He served in the Quartermaster Corps at various locations, most notably Fort Lee, Virginia where he met his future bride, Dorothy Duncan. After the war ended, Joe and Dorothy moved back to Sullivan County and made their home in Monticello for more than 60 years. Joe took a job with the then-fledgling Inter-County Farmers Cooperative Association in Woodridge. He rose to become Assistant General Manager and General Manager, and then stayed on during his "retirement" (after age 80) to bring the successful financial dissolution of the Co-Op to a conclusion in 2008. Up to the time of his death, Joe was very active in the community. He was a founding member of Temple Sholom in Monticello, where he held several offices including President. He was an active member of the Monticello Rotary Club and in 2004 at age 88 Joe became the club's oldest President. He will be sorely missed by friends and neighbors alike. He is survived by his children, daughter Susan Crown and her husband Ian of Stamford CT, son David and his wife Michele of Mileses, NY, brothers Roy and his wife Joan Cohen of Tarrytown NY, and Nat and his wife Rita Cohen of Delray Beach, FL, sister Shirley Zuckerman and her husband Lenny of Israel, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and a world of friends. He was predeceased by Dorothy, his wife of 57 years, as well as by his brother Harry and sisters Anna Goldsmith, Reva Agus and Mary Rosenberg. Funeral services will be held Monday March 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway, Monticello. Burial will be in the Temple Sholom Cemetery Southwoods Dr, Monticello, NY. The family will be sitting Shiva at Joe's home from Tuesday through Thursday evening.
