Obituary of Norman Schwartz
Dr. Norman Schwartz peacefully passed away at his home in Rock Hill, NY on July 9, 2009. He was born in the Bronx in 1924, the youngest son of the late Louis and Sophie Schwartz.
He graduated from Dewitt Clinton High School, where he was student body president and captain of the basketball team, before earning his Bachelor's Degree at Union College, his M.A. from Columbia, and his Doctor of Education from NYU. During World War II, he served in the Pacific on the U.S.S. Massachusetts.
He had a distinguished career as an educator in the New York State public school system as a teacher, basketball coach, guidance counselor, principal, and administrator in Ellenville, Lynbrook, Westbury, Wyandanch, Kingston, and Long Beach. He served for 19 years as Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education in Syosset until 1986, and then served as Superintendent in Warwick, Middletown and Ellenville, where he had begun his teaching career and met the love of his life, Jean. He was devoted to public service, the arts and civic causes throughout his life, including the Rotary Club (President, Syosset) among many others, and was named state administrator of the year by the NYS School Music Association.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Jean (Robinson), with whom he shared a very full and rich life. He is also survived by his son Richard Schwartz and his fiance Jenny Sharpe; his son Lee Schwartz and his wife Christine Oster; his daughter Lorraine Pritchard and her husband Greg; and his brother Jack Schwartz and wife Betty. He cherished each of his five grandchildren, Jonathan and David Schwartz and Eric, Curt, and Sara Pritchard. He was preceded in death by his brother Stan Schwartz.
A memorial service will be held at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway in Monticello, NY on Tuesday, July 14, at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties or to a favorite charity.
