Evelyn Bernkrant Diamond Heller died Friday, January 29, in Portland, OR. She was born in New York City March 10, 1912, one of 9 children of Aaron and Anna Bernkrant.
Evelyn grew up as a first generation child on a farm near Ellenville. After marrying Sam Diamond in 1938, she resided in Wurtsboro for nearly 60 years before moving to Portland. After Sam's death, she married Joseph Heller.
As a youngster, Evelyn worked in her brother's grocery stores. She was active in many religious and social organizations, including the Wurtsboro synagogue and Eastern Star. Evelyn was very charitable, her mailbox always bulging with solicitations. Also, she got along with everyone, including difficult people.
Evelyn enjoyed travel, particularly visiting her family. Even in her 90's, she still made trips to Israel. She and her second husband spent many winters in Florida. There, as an 86 year old pedestrian, she was seriously injured by a car, but with much grit, she made a remarkable recovery.
Evelyn leaves behind three children: Harold G. Diamond of Urbana IL, Adele S. Thompson of Portland OR, and Alice P. Weiss of Betar, Israel; her sister-in-law, Esther Levine, as well as seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and their children. She was predeceased by her siblings and one grandchild.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m., today, Sunday, January 31, with Rabbi Goodman officiating at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway, Monticello. Burial will be in Wurtsboro Synagogue Cemetery, Route 209, Wurtsboro.
