Obituary of Leon Lashinsky

Leon Lashinsky, 83 Monticello, NY October 18, 1926 - June 27, 2010 Leon Lashinsky, beloved father, and grandfather, died Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Catskill Regional Medical Center with his family at his side. He was born in Monticello to Anna and Jacob Lashinsky, the third of four children, on October 18, 1926. With his two brothers, Abe and Sol, Leon ran Lashinsky's Kosher Meat Market on Broadway in Monticello for 40 years. Leon, a renowned cook, introduced cooked foods in the butcher shop to the delight of his many customers. Barbecued chicken, roasts, chopped liver, and stuffed cabbage were a few of his customers' favorites. Many remember Leon for his lovely wavy red hair and blue eyes. Others remember him for his polished dancing style or his great fishing skills. Perhaps he will be best remembered for his stage presence and sense of humor. He had a vast store of jokes, which he told with perfect timing. Leon is survived by his five children, Sandra Lines of Chicago; Eileen Kantor of Passaic, NJ; Gail Lashinsky O'Neil of Loch Sheldrake; Janet Kaplan of So. Fallsburg; and Michael Lashinsky of Reading, PA; his nine grandchildren, Andrew Lines, Ami Kantor Finestein, Tammy Kantor Greenberg, Jordan Kantor, Adam Morman, Julie Morman, Jayme Kaplan, Aaron Kaplan, and Alison Lashinsky, and 7 great-grandchildren, Abagail Morman, Daniel Morman, Pinchas Finestein, Rachel Finestein, Asher-Anchel Finestein, Henry Greenberg, and Jasper Field Lines. In Leon's words, "I'm a rich man. All my children and grandchildren talk to me." Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 29, at 11 am at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway in Monticello with Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz officiating. Burial will follow at the Workman circle Cemetery, Thompson Road in Monticello. The family will be sitting Shiva at the home of Janet and Irving Kaplan in So. Fallsburg. Arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home of Monticello.
