Obituary of Irwin Karchmer

Irwin Mac Karchmer Ellenville, NY March 29, 1920-December 30, 2011 Irwin Mac Karchmer, 91, of Ellenville, NY, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2011 at home. The son of Anna (Clare) and Henry Karchmer, he was born in Penns Grove, NJ on March 29, 1920. He is predeceased by his siblings: Betty Horowitz, Samuel, Frieda Brown, and Harry. After graduating from Monticello High School, he attended Buffalo State Teachers College where he majored in Industrial Arts Education, was a cheerleader, and met Ann (Reed) whom he married on July 3, 1943. He left college and proudly supported the World War II effort by joining the United States Army Air Corps where he served training other pilots. After his military service he resumed his education at the University of Buffalo where he graduated with a degree in accounting. In 1950 the family moved to Ellenville where Irwin was employed by Channel Master until he retired. During this time, and on into retirement, he enjoyed golf, tennis (which he took up at the age of 59) and walking. He was active in the Jewish War Veterans, and acted as Commander for one year. He was also active in Temple Rodeph Sholom, and the Shawangunk Country Club. He acted as treasurer for both organizations for several years. Irwin is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Ann; daughter, Susan; a sister-in-law, Paula (Leventhal), and many nieces and nephews. His son, Michael predeceased him this year. The Memorial Service and Burial will take place on Monday, January 2 at 11 a.m. at the Temple Rodeph Sholom Cemetery on Otens Road at Roberts Road in Wawarsing. (Take US Route 209, to Oak Ridge Road, to Otens Road.) The family will receive guests on Monday through Wednesday evenings, January 2 - January 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined.
