The spirit of Edith Julia Golant Rothblatt left her body on March 10, 2012. A former resident of Liberty, N.Y. and Palm Springs, California, she spent the past 12 year at Belltrone Living Center of Colonie, NY and then Home of the Good Shepherd in Saratoga Springs/Wilton, NY.
Daughter of hoteliers Rachel and Benjamin Golant of Upper Ferndale, NY, she was born on July 9, 1919. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, attorney and long time Town Justice R. Robert Rothblatt, her son Marc Richard Rothblatt, and all of her younger siblings and their spouses.
She is survived by her daughter Ann R. Krull (Robert Krull), granddaughters Rachel E. Schumacher (Jason Tulley) and Jessica N. Krull (Jaimy Juliano) and loving grandsons Zachary J. Tulley and Noah G. Tulley. She will be remembered by all as the strong loyal matriarch of a large and close extended family on both the Rothblatt and Golant sides. She taught them all to use humor to defeat fear and maintain health.
A graduate of Liberty High School, Edith served as a SPAR (Womens Coast Guard) in Washington, DC during World War II, and returned to Liberty to raise her family and support her husband's law and public service career. After being widowed in 1968, she fulfilled her dream and completed her formal education earning a BA in English with honor and an MA degree in English and Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz. She worked as a substitute English teacher at Liberty High School. She was active in various civic organizations in Liberty including serving as President of the Library Board. She also enjoyed many winters in Palm Springs with her California family.
At Belltrone senior residence, she organized its first monthly book discussion group and kept it going for 11 years. During her last 6 months At Home of the Good Shepherd, she was a popular resident and Rummy Cube player. Her geographically scattered family will always value her efforts to keep us connected via Thanksgiving traditions and the annual family Trivial Pursuits, Scrabble and other games competitions.
Her immediate family will attend a graveside ceremony at Ahavath Israel cemetery on March 12, 2012 at 2PM, Rabbi Kay will officate.
