Obituary of Sidney Louis Horowitz

Sidney Lewis Horowitz, lifelong resident of Monticello, NY, died peacefully, Monday, July 15th, at Northern Westchester Hospital at the age of 90.
Sidney was born in Monticello on January 26, 1923 to Dora and Nathan Horowitz. Upon graduation as Valedictorian of the Monticello High School class of 1940, Sidney attended NYU School of Engineering where he graduated in 1948 as a Civil Engineer. Mr. Horowitz is a veteran of the US Army, whose college career was interrupted by service in the South Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Horowitz started his long career as a Civil Engineer at the New York Board of Water Supply where he worked on the building of the Neversink Dam as part of the NYC's Catskill reservoir system. In 1953, he accepted a position as a Base Engineer at Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, NY, where he served for 20 years with distinction and commendations from the USAF. Upon his retirement in 1973, he went into private practice centered in the Sullivan Orange and Ulster County areas as a Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor. He maintained his practice right up until the time of his passing.
During his lifetime, Sidney was active in the Jewish Community of Monticello. He was a member of the Landfield Avenue Synagogue, and served as President in the 1960's during the construction of their new building. He was also active in local UJA, Israel Bonds, and ZOA chapters.
Mr. Horowitz is survived by Elaine, his wife of 62 years; by five children: Howard (Alisse Waterston) of New Rochelle, NY, Alan (Arlene) of Tel-Aviv, Israel, Nathan (Roberta) of Mt. Kisco, NY, Mark (Rochelle) of East Brunswick, NJ, and Deborah Cohen (Jonathan) of Katonah, NY; by his sister, Beatrice Brother of Monticello, NY, and by nine grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brothers: Joseph and Bernard.
Funeral Services for Sidney will be held on Wednesday, July 17th, at 11:30 a.m. at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc., 388 Broadway, Monticello, with internment immediately following at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery on Thompsonville Road in Monticello.
The family will sit the traditional Jewish "Shiva" starting Thursday, at the home of Nathan and Roberta Horowitz, 21 Daley Cross, Mt. Kisco, NY (914-666-6257).
