Obituary of Shirley Cohen

Shirley Cohen, a retired clerk for the Sullivan County Board of Elections and long-time area resident passed away peacefully on Monday, September 17, 2018. She was 91 years old. The daughter of the late Samuel and Celia Newberg, Shirley was born on January 23, 1927 in the Bronx. Shirley lived in Hurleyville in her early years before moving to Monticello with her husband Murray and her children.  She adored her family and enjoyed spending time with them and celebrating the holidays together. 

 

She loved painting in her younger years and jewelry making in her later years.  Shirley and Murray spent the winters during their retired years in their condo on the beach in Destin, Florida. Shirley was involved in The Order of the Eastern Star and the Red Hat Society.    

 

Shirley is survived by her daughters Shari and Janice, son Michael, son-in-laws David and David and daughter in law Shirley, grandchildren Alan, 

Carla, Matthew, Shellie, Danielle and Mackenzie, as well as her great grandson Thomas.   

 

Shirley was pre-deceased by her devoted husband Murray, her brother Benjamin Newberg and sister Lillian Blechman. 

 

Funeral services and burial will take place at the Congregation Anshe Hurleyville Synagogue Cemetery, Cemetery Road in Hurleyville privately and at the convenience of the family.

 

Memorial contributions in Shirley’s name may be made to The Shriner's Children's Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.
