Sullivan County School Boards Assn posted a condolence
Mel will be missed by the school board members of Sullivan County. He was dedicated to the education of children and participated in his own district, county-wide and on the state level. He was always eager to be an informed board member by attending the NY State Convention, NY State School Boards State Legislative Network and county meetings. We offer our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

When I was first a social worker in the Benjamin Cosor family, in 1988, Mel was the Drug and Alcohol Counselor. He helped me learn the ropes. He went on a home visit with me to a camp ground, where a family was living in an RV with no inside water, and no heat. It was getting late in the fall. Mel oriented me to what was an acceptable limit for impoverishment, and what had to be corrected with help, even if someone didn't want help. It was an enlightening moment for me and I never forgot it. Thanks for all your big-hearted service to our families, Mel.

Mel was a true and cherished friend. We spent so many hours together in school working on solutions for kids at risk. He made my life as a principal so much easier----day in and day out. I must say that I cherished our friendship deeply and I am a better person today for having knowm this sensitive, caring man. He's probably pacing in heaven trying to figure out how to help an angel on drugs.....With Love and in Sorrow, Barry

I was certainly saddened to hear about Mel's passing. He lived a life devoted to caring for others, so often at the expense of his own time & schedule. I know he has left a great number of people better off than when he found them and that is a notable and rare quality. My family will be praying for your family at this time - may you find comfort and strength from our Creator during this challenging time.

Mel was a very special man to many! I will always reflect fondly on his words of advice, and encouragement, when I was a younger man. He cared deeply about our community youth, and he will be missed tremendously.

Mel was such an amazing person and one of the most loving, caring individuals I have ever met. Who else but Mel could be happy and smiling when his office was a storage closet. "Step into my office", he would say and it felt like a refuge in the madness that was high school. I could tell him anything and he would listen without judgement. When I learned of his passing I turned to my son with tears in my eyes and he asked what was wrong, after telling him he said " I know him, I saw him at my school the other day, he is always smiling!" Even after meeting him one time he will live forever in my son's memory. I am very honored to have known such a wonderful man. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Dear family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I worked with Mel while I was a Special Ed. Teacher at Fallsburg. One fond memory stands out for me. I was concerned about a student, so I decided to make a home visit. When I arrived at the student's home, Mel was on his way also. I loved that he always had his finger on the pulse of the children. That was his gift from God that he shared as often as he could. I know he will be missed, but his caring legacy will live on.

We will sorely miss a dedicated member of our community. Our hearts go out to our dear friends Shari and Michael, and their beautiful boys who lost one of the most doting grandfathers we knew.
Mel worked with me on occasion in my classroom, bringing his SADD students in and also at times with the DARE program. I saw in Mel a true dedication to our school district...an advocate for students, programs and teachers....and an inspiration to me in becoming a Board Member. I will miss him terribly at our Board Meetings. To Dee, Daniel and his family, and Bruce and his wife....our deepest and sincerest condolences. Mel, rest in peace. We'll never forget you.

Mel was always an inspiration to me. He was warm, compassionate, and caring. He loved his Fallsburg community as much as we all loved him. I remember his "disappointment" when I told him I went into accounting instead of psychology :-)
Mel we will miss you. Much love in this time of pain to the entire Mednick family.

Mel was the heart of FCS and the Fallsburg family. He really cared about what each of us thought. I will miss the fact that everytime he was here at school he would run into my office to use my scale, I don't think in 18 years that his weight ever changed. He will be missed by all.
