Obituary of Melvyn Mednick

MELVYN MEDNICK WOODRIDGE, NY AUGUST 4, 1943-JANUARY 13, 2009 Melvyn "Mel" Mednick, a longtime resident of Woodridge, NY passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at his home. He was 65. Mel was born in Brooklyn the son of the late Harry and Sadye Mednick. He moved to Woodridge in 1968 to raise his family outside of the city. He worked in various places including being the original recreational director for the Emerald Green development. Mel also worked as a Physical Ed instructor for Sullivan Correctional Facility and also as a drug and alcohol counselor for Sullivan County Alcohol & Drug Services. In 1981 Mel found his calling as a Drug & Alcohol Counselor in the Fallsburg Central Schools where he worked until he retired in 1998. During his tenure he founded "WE ARE FAMILY" a sponsor of drug free events and originated the Fallsburg SADD Chapter. In his retirement he was elected to the School Board of Education for the Fallsburg Central School District where he served from 1999 until his untimely death on Tuesday. His contributions to the Fallsburg Community are immeasurable. He touched the lives of so many students and families. He will be missed by all that knew him. Mel's greatest love & joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. They shared an incredibly special bond, and his time was always dedicated to them. Mel is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years Sharon "Dee", his three sons; Michael and his wife Shari of Rock Hill, NY, Daniel and his wife Randi of Syosset, NY and Bruce Ivory and his wife Michelle of NYC, his six grandchildren: Logan, Justin, Ethan, Adam, Alexa and Carly, his two brothers; Len Mednick of Brooklyn and Barry Mednick of Smithtown and many nieces and nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 16, 2009 at 10am at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc. 388 Broadway Monticello, NY. Rabbi Michelle Medwin will officiate. Burial will be in the Temple Sholom Cemetery Southwoods Dr. Monticello. The family will be sitting Shiva at the home of Michael & Shari Mednick in Rock Hill on Friday till sundown and then again on Sunday, January 18 and Monday January 19.
