Obituary of Glory Weisberger Katz

Glory Weisberger Katz passed away at the Glen Arden Health Care Center in Goshen, NY on Sunday, January 31st surrounded by the love of her family. The daughter of the late Abraham Weisberger and Rose Polstein, Glory was born on August 11, 1928 in Cedarhurst NY. An extremely intelligent woman, Glory graduated with honors from Julia Richmond HS in 1946, Syracuse University in 1949 and Columbia Teachers College with her Masters’ Degree in Teaching in 1964. While in Syracuse University she met her husband, Harvey, who was a WW11 veteran. They married right after they graduated from college and were married for 62 years, having two children, Susan and Arne. They lived in Yonkers, NY until 2005 when they moved to Glen Arden in Goshen, NY. Glory devoted much of her life to community advocacy. She was instrumental in bringing services to the developmentally disabled to Westchester County when no services were available. This included co-founding a camp and tirelessly advocating for equal school opportunities. She was a devoted teacher whose students stayed in contact with her for many years. She was active in United Jewish Appeal, the Yonkers League for Retarded Citizens and was on the Board of Visitors of Rockland Psychiatric Center for over 25 years, including serving as president. She received many accolades and awards over the years for her tireless work on behalf of individuals with disabilities. She was a gifted special education teacher who taught for Southern Westchester BOCES where she made many lifelong friends and inspired countless students. Glory loved her family, Mets baseball, Syracuse University, her cats and friends. Harvey and Glory traveled all over the world and took advantage of every invitation to parties and other special events they received, traveling throughout the United States for them. Together they greatly enjoyed an active life, even after Harvey was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Glory’s courage and energy contributed to Harvey having a wonderful quality of life, even as he became more disabled throughout the years. Glory’s love and care for her son, Arne and her vision of total inclusion for all was an inspiration. She adored her son in law, Stephen Miller and thought of him as another son. She is survived by her beloved son, Arne Katz, of Woodridge, NY and her daughter and son in law, Susan and Stephen Miller, also of Woodridge. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Pamela Brier, Peter Braun, Evelyn Ophir, Elana Dykewoman, Daniel Nachman, David Nachman, Kathe Sprouse, Connie Stevens and Margaret Silverman. She is also survived by ten great nieces and nephews, including one special great niece, Jennifer Brier and her son, Nathaniel Brier, Glory’s great, great nephew. She was predeceased by her sisters, who she loved greatly, Josephine Silverman, Rachel Nachman, Tamar Braun and Patricia Engel.
