Alan, the entire Toy family loves you, myself included—from the moment we met through Alex. You are a dynamo—so aware, plugged-in, smart, enthusiastic, excellent and loving attitude—so much more. I think of you and hear your laughter. I call the corner of the couch where you liked to sit, “the Alan corner” and it will always be known as this—even if we ever get a new couch—a small gesture, but I promise. It was always exciting to have you over to hang out with Alex and Cesi. I am going to continue to have the conversations we’ve enjoyed, with you. I know you answer me in that place of peace within. You live in my heart now, dearest Alan. I am fully grateful for your life among us. Peace, Gratitude, so much Love, Marian

I was one of Alan’s first counselors at the Frost Valley YMCA. He was an adorable little fellow (probably around 7 years old) with a shaggy head of black hair. He was very precocious, funny for a little kid, and smart. One day my fellow counselor Mike Chaberski and I were watching Alan and some other campers between activities and we needed to kill time. We decided to tell these children the plot of a movie we were sure they’d never seen and pass it off as a story we just making up so they’d think we were amazing tale-spinners. We told them about a prince who came to New York to find his bride, about how he worked at a fast food restaurant to hide his royal heritage, etc. The kids all thought it was amazing that we were just improvising this story from nothing until little Alan piped in “Hey, isn’t this just the plot of ‘Coming to America‘?” Mike and I always enjoyed that story and laughed about it with Alan when he got older. Today it makes me smile through my sadness.
In every Frost Valley generation there are a few campers who "carry the flame", camp ignites something inside of them. They almost intrinsically understand what a special place it is; want to know all its secrets; and are inspired to bring the love, joy, friendship, and wonder of camp to anyone that comes there. Alan was that one of those people. He loved camp and camp loved him and when he left he brought the love, joy, friendship, and wonder of camp to everyone he met in the world outside. He was an engine of good will and positivity wherever he went and his loss is a loss to the greater world.
I am so sorry for everyone who knew him that he is no longer with us, but so glad for all the good memories he left us with so we may keep a piece of him with us always.

Whenever there was an imbalance, you sought out a way to balance. When there was a wrong, you fought for the right. You would preemptively set a positive tone so that there was no chance for a negative one. You truly cared about people, but you also didn’t care what people thought. You lived in a bubble, with you or against you and hold on if we are with you because it’s going to be a fun ride - LOUD laughs, tears streaming laughs, SNARK, so much snark, blocking out the hate and creating a memory. A song, a hug, a dance, a moment. There are too many to count, but they will always be remembered and felt - you taught me how to be in the moment - I owe you so much my friend and will miss you, but promise to honor you. Forever bud, forever.

Alan, you were the big brother I never had. You were the gentlest giant I've ever met, and all you wanted to do was make people smile. And wow were you good at that. Whether it was your with your hugs, humor, laugh, or kindness, you could make anyone smile in minutes. You were a bulwark of the Frost Valley Spirit, a beacon of light. And even though you are gone, I can still see that light in everyone you impacted, myself included. And I promise you, I won't let that light dim. I'll miss you, Alan.

Alan I'm heartbroken you're no longer here with us. I have known you since elementary school in my daughter's class. You were always one of the most jolly and accepting souls I've ever known. I just spoke with you on your birthday laughing about when your Dad would meet me at the day camp bus to smuggle you homemade cookies to sleep away camp. I can still hear you calling me Little T from Theater Club. You are a big heart that I will truly miss. Love you Alan❤

I met Alan in 2000 at the Frost Valley YMCA Community Center. He was one of the Community Center Originals! I was lucky to worked with him almost every day for many years- after school at School's Out, Day Camp, Teen Trips, and most of our events- Bowl-A-Thons, holiday camp, trips to sporting event, etc. You name it and Alan and his parents Mike and Karen supported us. Alan had the best smile and his energy was unmatched, as were his hugs. The only way you could slow Alan down when he was a kid was to put a Harry Potter book out. And then he could be found sitting on the rug, under the piano reading. As he grew up, he joined our Resident Camp and found his home. We witnessed an even more confidant and charismatic Alan come alive, both as a camper and then as a staff. Alan did everything with gusto and I could not help getting swept away in it. As did so many. He was a superstar. He was a light in life. He is gone too soon. I will miss you Alan "the boss" Moss. I love you my friend.
